About Yvonne Crooks Barber

Dr. Yvonne Crooks Barber executive leadership author and speaker

Introduction

Yvonne Crooks Barber is an author, speaker, executive leader, and Doctor of Strategic Leadership whose work explores leadership development, resilience, adaptability, and growth through uncertainty. Throughout her professional career and personal journey, she has developed a deep appreciation for the ways unexpected experiences can shape perspective, reveal strengths, and influence how individuals lead themselves and others. Through her writing and speaking, she encourages people to recognize leadership qualities that may already exist within their own experiences and to continue moving forward even when certainty is no longer available.

Executive Leadership and Organizational Strategy Experience

Throughout her career, Yvonne Crooks Barber held leadership positions that included Controller, Vice President of Finance, and Chief Financial Officer. In these roles, she was responsible for financial leadership, strategic planning, operational oversight, organizational decision-making, and guiding teams through periods of growth, change, and complexity. Her professional experience provided firsthand insight into the realities of leadership, including the responsibility of making decisions with incomplete information, adapting to changing circumstances, and helping organizations navigate uncertainty while remaining focused on long-term objectives.

These experiences reinforced the importance of resilience, adaptability, accountability, and purposeful leadership. They also shaped her belief that leadership potential often exists long before a formal title is awarded and that many of the qualities associated with effective leadership are developed through challenges, responsibilities, and experiences that individuals may not initially recognize as leadership development.

Doctor of Strategic Leadership

Seeking to deepen her understanding of leadership and organizational effectiveness, Yvonne Crooks Barber earned a Doctorate in Strategic Leadership. Her doctoral studies focused on leadership development, organizational strategy, and the factors that influence individual and organizational growth. Through both academic research and practical application, she developed a greater appreciation for how leadership capabilities emerge, evolve, and are strengthened through experience.

Her academic work reinforced a perspective that would later become central to The Unstoppable Journey: leadership development is not limited to formal education, professional training, or organizational advancement. Many of the qualities associated with effective leadership—including resilience, adaptability, courage, accountability, and perseverance—are often cultivated through life experiences that challenge assumptions, require growth, and reveal strengths that might otherwise remain unrecognized.

When the Journey Changed

For much of her life, Yvonne Crooks Barber approached challenges with confidence that preparation, persistence, and thoughtful action would ultimately produce results. Whether leading professionally, pursuing ambitious goals, traveling the world, or taking on new adventures, she believed that obstacles could be navigated and that there was always a way forward. This perspective served her well throughout her career and personal life, reinforcing a belief that effort, planning, and determination could overcome most difficulties.

Over time, however, a series of unexpected health challenges introduced a level of uncertainty that could not be managed through the strategies that had always worked before. Plans no longer guaranteed outcomes. Effort did not always produce progress. Questions often existed without immediate answers. These experiences challenged long-held assumptions about control, success, leadership, and what it means to move forward when the future cannot be predicted.

Rather than ending the journey, those experiences reshaped it. They created opportunities for reflection, growth, and a deeper understanding of resilience, adaptability, and purposeful action. The lessons that emerged would eventually become the foundation for The Unstoppable Journey and a broader message about leadership, personal growth, and continuing forward even when certainty is no longer available.

Why I Wrote The Unstoppable Journey

I wrote The Unstoppable Journey because I believe growth remains possible, even during life’s most challenging seasons. Too often, adversity is viewed only through the lens of loss, limitation, or disruption. While those realities are undeniable, they do not tell the entire story. Difficult experiences can also reveal strengths, reshape perspectives, challenge assumptions, and create opportunities for growth that might never have emerged under different circumstances.

Through both professional leadership and personal experience, I came to recognize that many of the qualities associated with effective leadership—including resilience, adaptability, courage, perseverance, and purpose—are often developed long before individuals see themselves as leaders. These qualities frequently emerge through the challenges people face, the responsibilities they carry, and the decisions they make when certainty is unavailable.

My hope is that readers will begin to recognize the strengths that may already exist within their own experiences. I also hope that those responsible for developing future leaders will learn to look beyond traditional indicators of leadership potential and consider the experiences that shape character, perspective, and growth. Above all, I hope readers leave with a renewed belief that meaningful progress remains possible, even when the path forward is uncertain and no guarantees exist.
