Mapping UNSTOPPABLE: More Than One Way Forward
One of the first things I discovered after deciding to visit the locations that spell UNSTOPPABLE was that there is more than one way to complete the journey.
At first, I assumed the project would be relatively straightforward. The word was already identified through NASA imagery. Each letter had a corresponding location. My job would simply be to determine where those locations were and begin planning visits.
The reality turned out to be far more interesting.
As I explored the NASA data, I discovered that many letters have multiple possible locations. Some are found within the United States. Others are located in remote regions of the world. Some can be reached with careful planning. Others present significant logistical challenges. A few appear far more practical from a satellite image than they do from the ground.
What initially appeared to be a single route quickly became a collection of possibilities.
That realization transformed the way I viewed the project.
Instead of asking, “How do I visit the letters in order?” I found myself asking a different question.
“What is the best way to keep moving forward?”
The distinction may seem subtle, but it changed everything.
The original plan involved visiting each letter in the order it appears within the word UNSTOPPABLE. While that approach seemed logical, it quickly became apparent that geography had other ideas. Some destinations are located relatively close to one another and can reasonably be combined into a single trip. Other locations are separated by vast distances. Certain destinations are significantly more accessible than others. Still others require additional consideration because of safety, transportation, cost, or other practical realities.
As a result, the journey will likely unfold differently than I originally imagined.
Some letters may be visited sooner than expected.
Others may take years to reach.
A few destinations may remain aspirational for the foreseeable future.
One example involves the letter T. While there are options associated with that letter, neither currently feels like a destination that I can safely pursue under present circumstances. That does not mean the letter has been abandoned. It simply means that some goals require patience, preparation, and a willingness to wait for the right opportunity.
I suspect many worthwhile goals operate in much the same way.
One of the most surprising discoveries involved realizing that the map itself reflects the lessons that inspired The Unstoppable Journey. The project does not reward rigid thinking. Instead, it encourages flexibility, creativity, problem-solving, and adaptation. Every time I identify a more efficient route, discover an unexpected opportunity, or reconsider how a destination might be reached, I am reminded that progress is rarely as linear as we expect it to be.
The view from space suggests simplicity.
The view from the ground tells a different story.
From a satellite image, the letters appear fixed and uncomplicated. The destinations seem neatly arranged on a screen. Yet every location exists within a real landscape shaped by weather, terrain, transportation systems, geography, and countless other variables. The closer I look, the more complexity I discover.
Life often works the same way.
From a distance, other people’s journeys can appear straightforward. Success appears inevitable. Progress appears continuous. The path seems obvious. Yet once we understand the details, we discover the adjustments, detours, delays, disappointments, and unexpected opportunities that helped shape the outcome.
Perhaps that is one of the reasons this project continues to resonate with me.
The goal remains clear.
Visit the locations that spell UNSTOPPABLE.
The route, however, remains open.
That openness is no longer something I view as a problem to solve. Instead, it has become one of the most interesting aspects of the journey. Every destination represents a possibility. Every route represents a choice. Every adjustment creates the opportunity to learn something new.
The map provides direction.
The journey provides meaning.
And somewhere between the two, the adventure continues.
In future posts, I will introduce the individual letter locations, share updates from the road, and document the experiences that unfold along the way. Some destinations may arrive exactly when expected. Others may appear when I least anticipate them.
Either way, the journey continues forward.
And that, perhaps, is the most important part.
